Measuring Circles

The measurement around a circle is called the circumference. This lesson is a fun way help your child discover the circumferences of different objects and chart his findings. Active children love to run here and there measuring items around the house and yard.

What You Need:

Measuring tape or 2-foot length of string marked in inches, colored markers, ruler, circular things to measure

Activity 1:

  1. Show your child how to measure around objects such as cans, balls, pans,
    flower pots, bottles, or his wrist, neck, or leg.
  2. Have him list the name of each item, along with its circumference. Help as needed. Explain how to round to the closest inch.

Activity 2:

Make a chart, as shown below. Show your child how to chart the data.
