I ran across Eragon while in a group home in Florida. I was going through a pretty hard time in my life, my mother died when I was 15 leaving me to the will of my grandparents who were more interested in the money than me. I was moved from my home state to live with them until they could establish guardianship to take control of my SSI and life insurance payments from my moms death. They had kicked me out and placed me on the national run away list. Due to my honesty I was picked up and placed in the group home, I really was not okay with everything that had been going on. I was cutting, thinking heavily of suicide, I really didn’t care what happened to me because the first chance I had..I was going to end it. I didn’t want to be in a group home, I didn’t want to be back on the streets and I knew going back to my grandparents was going to be a living hell. I remember walking past the library and seeing the bright blue cover. When I was younger I lived in shelters and on the streets and my only get away from reality was reading. Having a thing for dragons..I saw Saphira and being a dragon lover opened the book. I could relate to Eragon, the confusion of the world turned upside down, having to fight to survive, not giving up. It lit a fire in me, it reminded me that I had made it through so much that I could handle this and more (and of course I had to see what happened to Saphira and Eragon in the next book.)
Long story made short, I am a volunteer fire fighter, in the academy to become a law enforcement officer with a sense of duty and honor I had lost when my mom died that I was reminded about from that book. I cant say i’m your biggest fan Mr. Paolini in the sense of merchandise, I don’t have all your books or all the artwork, being a first responder most of my money goes to gear and food. But you have a loyal fan who will never stop believing because of you.
I will always be thankful for you Mr. Paolini I can not wait to see what you do next.
