Our space-faring author spent a full year developing the technology for To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. Because the book takes place in our future, which consequently encompasses the real world, Christopher didn’t want to contradict physics as we know it. His background was also exclusively fantasy, so he had to familiarize himself with everything from spaceship propulsion, to the equations that govern acceleration, and space combat requirements. For example, during a battle between two ships, there are certain situations where it would make better sense to use lasers and others situations when missiles are the best choice.
